Table Talk with The Funky Junk Sisters

Us Junk Sisters love to head over to Mom's house for some "table talk"! Mom is a magazine/design book hound. She has tons of them. It's a blast for Funky Junk Sisters #1 (Mom),#2 (Linda), #3 (Dixie)and #4 (Patty) to gather round her kitchen table for some creative inspiration. Mom will pile all the books and magazines in the middle of the table for all of us to read. She'll have an endless pot of coffee ready and we'll grab at the pile. What we actually do is look through the pics and exclaim out loud when we find something cool or useful to us. Then we shout out the idea and show the pic to all. From there we'll add our own touches by elaborating on the concept. Many a funky idea has come from gab sessions like these!

Here are a few of our favorites.

Invite some girlfriends over today for some "table talk", you just never know what fabulous ideas you'll come up with.

Til next time....

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Have you ever wondered how certain stories come about? This is about Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer...

Montgomery Ward... once a catalog and retail giant closed all their stores in 2001, but they left behind one thing that will probably live on forever. What started as a marketing gimmick has become a beloved Christmas story.

In the early 30's Montgomery Ward would have their store Santa hand out coloring books to all the children. A way to save a few dollars, they decided to create and publish their own storybooks to give away.

In 1939, they gave the job to Robert May who worked for Montgomery Ward as a copywriter. Based on his own childhood experiences of being shy, small, and sickly. He decided to write about a reindeer who would not fit in... the glowing red nose! Names that were considered were Rollo (to cheerful for a misfit) Reginald (just to British)... Rudolph was a favorite name that May's daughter Barbara enjoyed the most. He proceeded to write Rudolph's story in verse, as a series of ryhming couplets, testing it out on his 4-year-old daughter. Barbara loved the story, May's bosses was worried that a story about a red nose -associated with drinking and drunkards- was not appropriate for a Christmas tale. May asked Denver Gillen, a friend from Montgomery Ward's art department, to the Lincoln Park Zoo to sketch some deer. Gillen's drawings of a red nosed reindeer helped overcome any hesitance from May's bosses, and the Rudolph story was approved. In 1939 Montgomer Ward distributed 2.4 million copies of the Rudolph booklet and although a wartime paper shortage curtailed printing for the next several years, a total of 6 million copies had been giving away by the end of 1946.

Since, May was an employee of Montgomery Ward he did not hold the copyright for Rudolph... May's wife had died from cancer about the time he wrote the story and now deeply in debt from the medical bills. May persuaded Montgomery Ward's corporate president, Sewell Avery, to turn the copyright over to him in 1947. With the rights in hand, May's financial security was assured.

In 1947, May's brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, wrote the song to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Sang by Gene Autry in 1949, sold 2 million copies that year.

This is a wonderful story that I learned as a young 17 year old girl who worked for the retail company called Montgomery Ward. In 1989 we celebrated the 50 year anniversary and gave away many more books.

Merry Christmas!
xoxo

Great Ways To Use Old Ladders

We know ya'll come across rickety old ladders at garage sales. Most men don't see the value in them so they toss em' out for garbage, after all, if they are rickety then they can't be used for their original purpose...right?
Sooooo WRONG...here's what we see in an old ladder!

Use a small step ladder for an end table. You can paint it any color you want. Since its small and sorta see through...you could go really bold with it.

Here's a clever way to store books and they are right a the tip of your fingers.

Use a ladder to display a collection of items, like these vintage buckets. Maybe you collect perfume bottles, this would be perfect for that in a bathroom. You could a couple of rungs for towels.

This is a creative way to use old ladders, old locker baskets and vintage style light bulbs. Unique!

Take them outside and use them for a beverage station at your next outdoor BBQ.
So let's let those men continue to throw out their useless ladders....one of us junksisters will find em' and put em' to good use!  Can we get an AMEN...sisters?

The Sweet Little Santa Fe Is Gone And Now We Are Working On Another Vintage Travel Trailer Makeover

The 1964 Santa Fe has found a new home! The new owner is the cutest man that wanted her soooooo bad. It all started when we took her to a wedding a couple of weeks ago. The father of the bride spotted it when we pulled in and ever since could not take his mind off of the Santa Fe. We received several phone calls from Dale (the father of the bride) telling us how much he wanted her. Finally we gave in and gave Dale what he wanted...he took her home last week. Camano Island will now be her new address.

We now have a new project trailer...a 1971 Red Dale.

Here's a peak inside. It's pretty dark. No cushions on the gaucho...we hate that...foam can be so pricey.
More darkness in the dinette area.
Fast forward.....we have started working on the inside of the Red Dale. Here you'll see it's got a nice bright coat of paint on the walls. It's actually one of our Funky Junk Sisters Paints. We used the color Ice Cream.  Dixie found a great price on foam so the gaucho now has new cushions!
We have started upholstering the cushions with a neutral brown Naugahyde.
Next the kitchen cabinets get a make over with a coat of paint too!
We will post more as we move along with the vintage travel trailer makeover so stay tuned to this blog. See ya soon Junksisters.
