It's FuRNiTuRe FRiDaY!

This week we are pleased to feature a piece that was made with tender loving care by a mother for her daughter's wedding.
We were so touched by the care she put into this special piece and special day.
Please check out her blog for a tutorial on how she created the look.

Ya'll need to know the rules for our FuRNiTuRe FRiDaY LiNk PaRtY.
1.) Your post must be about furniture. If your link has been deleted it’s because your post was not about furniture. You can share flea market/ thrift store finds, favorite pieces, DIY makeovers,  FAB furniture arrangements, or even furniture you want to own! YES, we consider Kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities furniture.
2.) Post a permalink (the link to the post), not the link to your blog.
3.) This party will close Tuesday at midnight PST and we will choose our favorite(s) and feature them  on next week’s FuRNiTuRe FRiDaY. Have fun!

It's our first FuRNiTuRe FRiDaY LiNk Up PaRtY!!!

We heart the way this project turned out...we found an old 80's buffet/hutch on CL, changed out the dated glass for bead board and painted it.
We didn't even change out the knobs or handles...we painted over them!
Guess you could call that being lazy...We brushed on our Funky Junk Sisters Paint in "ice cream" color. When it dried we distressed it by taking a wet cloth and rubbing the edges til the paint wears off,  just ever so slightly.  We prefer this method when we want a soft, worn look.
Lastly, we applied our Funky Junk Sister Wax to it for a protective finish.

Below are the before pics...

Amazing transformation! Don't be afraid to try it yourself. It's only paint...
you really can't mess it up.

We are dying to see some of your furniture projects.
Share them with us by linking up with the button below,
we will pick our favorite and feature it on our
FuRNiTuRe FRiDaY LiNk Up PaRtY
next week.

Super Easy DIY Advent Calendar

We took some time the other day to create a special Advent Calendar for our Funky Junk family.

Here's how we did it...
We used scrap wood to form a simple star. You'll need five boards,
each board measures 36 inches. Play around with them until you get the shape
you like, then nail them in place.
We wanted it to look old so we dry brushed it with our
in the color "galvanized bucket" and then with the color "ice cream".

After we painted it (which you can see a little better in this pic) we hot glued 24 mini clothespins to it. Here's our configuration.
Then we took some chalkboard labels (you can get these just about anywhere, ours are from Hobby Lobby but we've seen them at the Dollar Store too)....
stick them to some darling paper bags (Hobby Lobby).

Here's how they look after we used liquid chalk for the numbers.
We decided to fill our bags with a mixture of vintage ornaments, candy and holiday activities.
Once the bags were stuffed we folded the top over and
secured them on the star with the clothespins.
Taaa Daaa!!!!
It turned out so stinkin' cute!

It was easy....give it a try.

Easy Creative Thanksgiving Table Ideas.

Sometimes we go back and look through our old idea files....
here are a few EASY PEASY thanksgiving ideas we came up with a few years ago.
We even recycle and upcycle our ideas!

Here are some simple ways to dress up your holiday table. This could easily be made with some candles from the dollar store and some scrapbook paper.

A leaf stamped on pretty colored paper attached with a ribbon makes this place setting very inviting. Who could resist?

A paint pen will accomplish this quickly!

What are you thankful for? Write it down and share it with everyone as a decoration on your table scape.
If our table looks this good, our only worry is.... will our meal be able to compete?!!!!!!!!!

Vintage Good Form Aluminum Chair Redo

Just had to show you our redo of a vintage aluminum chair.

It is a Good Form chair from 1952. Here's how we know... it's stamped in the aluminum under the front bar on the chair, January 1952. With a little research we found that chairs that are upholstered with perforated vinyl are pre 1970. Newer chairs have solid vinyl. Our chair had some minor rips in the seat but we decided we wanted to leave it original and didn't mind the wear, so we left it alone.

 It also has this tag.
First we painted the body with Funky Junk Sisters Paint "ice cream" color. Then we stenciled the cross in Funky Junk Sisters Paint "red wagon" color. We dry brushed on some aging with Funky Junk Sisters Paint "Anvil" color around the edges. Finally we scuffed it up a bit with a sand block and put Funky Junk Sisters Wax over the top to protect it.

We heart the way it turned out.

Our Puyallup,Washington Holiday Vintage Market is just a little over a week away...maybe you will find a treasure there that you will want to redo!

Here's a show tip....
You can purchase early bird tickets online HERE and get in 30 minutes before all the crowds or you can go to the Washington State fairgrounds on Thursday November 13, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm
and buy your ticket early.
These are great ways to avoid the lines and get in before all the peeps waiting in line to purchase tickets the night of show opening.

Ever Wonder Why We Started All This Junkin Stuff? Here's A Look Back....

This blog is dedicated to FUNKY JUNK SISTER #1, our mother, Dixie. She is the original "Junk Queen".
She taught us (my sisters and I) how to decorate on a budget. That means that you went rummaging at garage sales, estate sales and flea markets all the time. And I do mean all of the time, if we were in the car with mom we were on the hunt. She would turn in at every garage sale sign she saw, and as kids, believe me, that wasn't always a good thing. She would hear the whining too. "Not another one! Let's go home!"
If my brothers were in the car, oh Lordy watch out. They would make her miserable all the way home for that last stop. The trip home wasn't a short one either. We lived in a small town north of Spokane, Washington so the ride home took about 35 minutes.
When we arrived back at the farm everyone that didn't make the trip into town with her was forced (seriously forced) to see all of her new finds.
Back then we didn't appreciate the things she found. Now it's a different story.... now we have taken all that she taught us and turned it into money, treasures, or heirlooms for our families. Thanks Mom, we finally get it!!

12 Tips for Using Funky Junk Sisters Paint (or any kind of chalk paint).

1.
We have painted tons of furniture over the years, we consider ourselves experts. Here's our two cents on the rules of painting with chalk paint. We finally got smart and decided to make a brand of our own, it's super easy to use ....anyone can do it. For more information on our Funky Junk Sister's Paint go to www.funkyjunksisterspaint.com. Here you'll see the beautiful colors we have personally selected just for you and a lookbook of some of the pieces we have created.

1.    Before you begin to paint, turn the can upside down for 30 minutes or so (make sure the lid is on tight) to allow all the settled ingredients to float down. Then go ahead and shake the can vigorously to mix it up good.
2.    Always start with a clean, dry piece of furniture. If painting cabinets or furniture with grease build up, you may want to use Mineral Spirits to wipe the piece off, allow to dry overnight before painting.
3.    Usually you don't need to sand or prime the furniture unless the piece is peeling, chipping or there is damage. Remember an imperfect surface can give your piece character!
4.    Using long, thin, smooth strokes, paint your first coat.  For the second coat, try tapping your brush in water, then in the paint to thin it. This also helps to reduce the brush strokes. For a washed effect, water down your paint and wipe off the extra to allow the grain of the wood to show through.
5.    When painting fabric, first use a spray bottle with water in it to wet down the fabric. The paint will absorb better.
6.    When applying Funky Junk Sister’s Wax, use a soft cloth (we like to use old T shirts) a little goes a long way. We prefer a mat finish, so we don’t buff a lot, but you can buff it to any sheen you desire.
7.    Use a small sealable container to create your own dark wax with a few drops of paint added to our clear wax. You can use a little more Clear to erase some of the dark if you put too much on. This method also works well with paint glitter products that are available. You’ll get that shimmery effect.
8.    Apply wax before distressing and it will cut down on the dust.
9.    For the best patina, use higher grit sandpaper. Use a lower grit such as 220 to distress. It’s best to sand against your brush strokes.
10.  For best results, temperature for painting and waxing should be between 55 and 80 degrees. Store your paint in these same conditions.
11.  Not often, but sometimes with pieces from the 30s and 40s, bleeding occurs after the first coat, it is best to stop and apply a coat of clear shellac and then continue with additional coats of paint.
12.  Paint brushes are easily cleaned with soap and water. If you can't clean them right away or are just between coats, put them in a zip lock bag to keep them from drying out.

The Funky Junk Sisters at The Stagecoach Music Festival

We arrived bright and early Thursday morning to begin our design for the newest addition to The Stagecoach Music Festival...The Honky Tonk Dance Hall. Boy was it warm! A little too hot for a couple of girls from the Pacific Northwest to be setting up in, we were so excited we nearly passed out! Here's a pic of the beginnings of our main stage area.
We used vintage channel letters and old doors for the back drop.

Here's the Funky Junk design team hard at work.

Lights are up and the finishing touches are being prepared.

Our Honky Tonk had a DJ in it much of the time....here's the backdrop we designed for her. Look closely and you will see Betsy the cow in her stall equipped with chandeliers.

Finally finished up after a long 12 hours....hit the sack for the night to get plenty of rest to play (also known as PARTY) the rest of the weekend!

Stagecoach graffiti. We totally agree, don't ya'll?

Nice to see our name on the official Stagecoach Festival brochure. Did you know 65,'000 fans attend this event? It's no wonder cuz it's an absolute blast!

Gotta say the whole Stagecoach crew treated us like real JuNK QuEEnS!
Every meal was delicious and the very best part....
the fabulous "up close and personal"
concert tickets we were treated to.
Thanks Stagecoach for a wonderful experience. WE CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!!!!
You will see some of our Stagecoach stage set up at our next
Funky Junk Sisters Vintage Flea Market
on June 20 & 21 in Puyallup, WA.
