Lavender Water

Lavender Water has been around for hundreds of years. We love the scent and use it in our laundry and on our linens. We hang garlands of it in our homes to keep things smelling fresh. All the "Junk Sisters" (#1,2,3 &4) gathered together a couple of weeks ago to make a new batch and we wanted to share the recipe with you....

1 cup lavender flower buds
water
vodka

Remove lavender flower buds from stems and add to a one-cup measuring container, pack lightly. Pour the measured cup of lavender buds into a glass mason jar.

Add one cup of water, preferably distilled or previously boiled and cooled.

Add 1/8 cup of vodka (yes vodka) stir or shake well.

Put the mixture in a sunny window for two weeks, shaking the jar each day to combine the ingredients.

Strain the lavender water into a pretty bottle and use as desired.

When washing bedding and linens, add some lavender water to the rinse cycle. Your bedding will have a light lavender scent.
Use when ironing, spritz a bit of the lavender water on the items being ironed. Will add a nice lavender scent to the garment.
Lavender water can also be used as a beauty aid, use it to freshen your skin on hot summer days, a hair rinse, splash in the bath or dab around temples for headache relief.
Lavender is naturally anti bacterial, take a small spritzer with you to use in your car or office when you can't get to a restroom to wash your hands.

Vendors We Want To Help You... Join Us At Our Junk Show In October!

Fellow junk people!

We have been travelin to many shows in the last few months and we have visited with many of you. Here's what we have noticed, first of all, we all know the economy is tough (it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out!), but even the reuse, recycle community is feeling it. Many of us offer items that are priced much lower than the average retailer. In the beginning of this downward spiral, vendors were happy to be selling and noticed for the terrific value they gave their shoppers. Now even the "value/savings" of a reused or recycled product isn't enough for some to make a purchase. Secondly, we have noticed that most 10x10 spots at a market are very hard to display and don't create a flow pattern conducive to shoppers. In other words the space is too small to create a traffic pattern. Most people stand outside and look in, they don't want to take the chance of getting trapped in the small area.

Here's the good news, we are gonna do something about it! We want vendors to make more money, so we have decided to slash our booth fee in half to $75 for a limited time only! We hope this will allow some to participate in our show that might not be able to otherwise and others to expand their space. We feel this is the right thing to do given the current situation we face with the economy.

We have a limited number of spots available so get your booth reserved today! This is a juried event and all applications will be considered on a first come first serve basis!

"The medicine cabinet won't shut!" screams my hubby. Oh boy, I thought to myself, that could mean bad news for me. Our medicine cabinet is located directly above the toilet...don't ask me why but there is limited space available by the counter so I think the builder thought it was best there. He didn't consider that things might accidentally fall out of the cabinet into the toilet! YUCK!!!

Here's the deal, I have lived with a house full of men for so long that I gave up on griping at them to put the lid down. Yes, I confess, I live with an open toilet lid. As a mother of boys, you must pick and choose your battles and being the only woman in the house with 4 men, I finally figured out it was a battle I would never win! Even today my three sons are all grown and live away but the toilet lid is still up in our house!

OK, on with the story...our home is small with a single bathroom so I always try to keep the counter free of clutter. A few days ago I decided we didn't need our toothbrush holder on the counter anymore. Most toothbrushes are too big to fit into the holes anyway, so I stuffed the holder into the medicine cabinet. That's why it wouldn't shut. Once I removed the culprit it closed just fine.

I brought it into the kitchen and left it on the counter while I did a few chores. As I glanced at it I realized that it reminded me of a flower frog. So I went to the garden and searched for the perfect blooms.. Wah lah it transformed into this...

The holes are perfect for holding the stems upright!

Go do something simple like this today. Bring some cuttings in from your garden and brighten up your world!

What to do with old light bulbs?

We found the coolest recycle project...hanging light bulb vases. Aren't they cute?

Here's a tip for the salt and pepper shakers...
glue something flat on the bottom of the bulbs to make them stand up on their own.
If you do this, you could also use the bulbs as stand alone vases!

Our Fall Show is just around the corner. We won't do another til 2011! Mark your calendars for October 15 & 16, 2010! We are bringin back "GIRLS NIGHT OUT" which will help support Breast Cancer Research. We'll have several returning vendors, many are your favorites and some NEW ones that we're sure will be added to your FAV list when everything is all said and done!

"Monroe" and "Berneice" will make an appearance... and a few more vintage babies will show their faces (Hint Hint... you know who you are)! The restoration of these old travel trailers have been fun projects for us. They may take a little longer than we first thought (alot more work than we thought too), but ohhhh they'll be worth it! Let's Take The Party Outside

The weather is beautiful here in the Pacific Northwest...so it's time to take our thoughts to outdoor entertaining. Here are some lovely ideas for your next outdoor party.

If you are like us (and we know you are) you've got a whole closet full of vintage linens. Don't be afraid to pull them out and show them off! Besides that is the reason you bought them isn't it, to use them? Sometimes we are afraid to use the things we collect. We say USE IT, surround yourself with your passion!

Don't be afraid of color, embrace it! Have fun with it, mix it up. Using color is like laughing out loud. It's fun!

Mix rustic with chic. A well worn red bench looks FAB with the elegant white laced cloth and red stripes. Just because it's a picnic doesn't mean you have to use paper plates...pull out the goblets and enjoy!

Look in your junk pile for inspiration, whoda thought birdcages would look so good hangin from a tree? Throw in some votives and you've got dining by candlelight.

Who needs benches when you can use hay bales? Simple burlap is used for the tablecloth with a splash of sunflowers for color.

Don't be afraid to use your indoor furniture outside. It changes the whole feel of outdoor dining.

Paper lanterns are always festive. If you want to throw in some "JuNK SaLvaTiON" style use hanging pom poms too.

Outdoor entertaining isn't just for summer, take it into the fall...paired with a fire pit for warmth. What more could you ask for?

White Painted Furniture

Here's a post we did a while back...we still get comments on it, so we thought we would repost it again for some of our new followers. Enjoy!

I spent most of yesterday painting furniture. It is not easy, my hands go numb, I get stuck in a crouching position and I can't get back up! Seriously, it takes me days to recoop....but there is nothing like seeing the finished masterpiece. That is when I remember why I love pieces painted white. They are so fresh, like a breath of spring air.
