Lavender Water

Lavender Water has been around for hundreds of years. We love the scent and use it in our laundry and on our linens. We hang garlands of it in our homes to keep things smelling fresh. All the "Junk Sisters" (#1,2,3 &4) gathered together a couple of weeks ago to make a new batch and we wanted to share the recipe with you....

1 cup lavender flower buds
water
vodka

Remove lavender flower buds from stems and add to a one-cup measuring container, pack lightly. Pour the measured cup of lavender buds into a glass mason jar.

Add one cup of water, preferably distilled or previously boiled and cooled.

Add 1/8 cup of vodka (yes vodka) stir or shake well.

Put the mixture in a sunny window for two weeks, shaking the jar each day to combine the ingredients.

Strain the lavender water into a pretty bottle and use as desired.

When washing bedding and linens, add some lavender water to the rinse cycle. Your bedding will have a light lavender scent.
Use when ironing, spritz a bit of the lavender water on the items being ironed. Will add a nice lavender scent to the garment.
Lavender water can also be used as a beauty aid, use it to freshen your skin on hot summer days, a hair rinse, splash in the bath or dab around temples for headache relief.
Lavender is naturally anti bacterial,
take a small spritzer with you to use in your car or office when you can't get to a restroom to wash your hands.

  4. I usually just add a few drops of lavender essential oil to distilled water in a spray bottle. I like the sounds of this way better. But what does the vodka do? Curious because I am also infusing vodka this week with lavender to make spiked lemonade for a family get together on Saturday and can't wait to try it!

  6. That picture of all the lavendar is about the most beautiful thing I think I've ever seen! The color is spectacular! I used to grow lavendar, but then the woody part would get all wild looking and I never knew how to prune it. I am definitely going to plant some more and read up on it. I was just thinking of that the other day! Thanx for the recipe - can't wait to try it and spritz on my bed linens!

  7. Hi Rusty Cupboard,
I read that you can use isopropal alcohol instead, but then I heard that isopropal may stain fabrics. If you try it let us know how it works.

  8. My recipe, remove flowers and take a swig of vodka...Pack a cup of flowers, taste vodka again...add water, take a swig of the vodka and measure. See if you've left enough vodka...take a bit to mix a martini...etc...Enjoy ;-D

  12. I posted directions for this on my blog using witch hazel instead of vodka.

Even though lavender essential oil is anti-bacterial you need a preservative of some sort to deter bacterial growth in the distilled water. Vodka works, but witch hazel makes it a little more user friendly. I even use it for my toner. And it makes a safer "monster spray" for the kiddos.
