Vintage Jewels

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to find a jewelry box full of vintage treasures at a garage sale. A very polite man was in charge of the sale and we didn't see a woman around...we wondered what kind of a glamorous woman would have worn such beautiful sparkly things. In today's world woman dress much more casual, but that doesn't mean that we don't want the sparkle around us! We began searching for ideas on how to surround ourselves with the BLING! Here you go .... We did borrow a mink stole from Funky Junk Sister #1's collection, this is what we might have to do with it!

This is a sweet idea and it won't take much work.

You would have to have a very large collection of jewelry to pull this off, we love the look.

Here is a simple way to brighten a friends day. Send them a beautiful card with a touch of glamor.

It's the weekend and summer is almost over, you better get out there and catch some of the last sales of the season!

We were visiting Debi's blog over at Garden Party recently and we saw her post about the wreaths she is making. Aren't they beautiful? Well guess what? Looks like she is saving most of them to be sold at our show! Ladies you better be making plans to go to the fundraiser Friday night, cuz we don't think these will last til Saturday! Debi is so talented, we were so impressed with her booth at our last show, it had a darling patio umbrella made with vintage fabric. That umbrella was snatched up so fast that we barely saw it! We are so happy that Debi & Garden party will be vendors again at our Fall Funky Junk Sisters Show!

Got a Little Junkin In!

Well I got a chance to stop by that thrift shop in Poky I was telling you about. I had to sneak it in between shopping for food to feed a house full of very hungry football players and the scrimmage. I picked up some old coke bottles there. You might ask yourself why would anyone want old coke bottles? You know us better than that! Just look what apartmenttherapy.com did with these old bottles. They are simple and perfect conversation starters, don't cha think?

A busy weekend for Funky Junk

Thank goodness for email, texting, facebook and twitter. It really does keep people connected. Dixie is moving back to Eastern Washington this weekend and we will be using all of these all of the time. I am a little sad because she will be a 4 1/2 hour drive away. On the other hand, she is excited about the opportunities for Funky Junk over there, so I'm OK with it. I got out of helping her move because my hubby and I drove to Idaho to see our youngest son's scrimmage. Lucky me, cuz I love football and I DO KNOW HOW MUCH JUNK DIXIE HAS TO MOVE! Anywhooo, I hope to get to one of my favorite thrift stores of all time, Desert Industries in Pocatello. I always seem to find alot of treasures there. I'll keep you posted!

Happy Birthday To Our Funky Junk Brother!

It is our brothers birthday and we want to take this opportunity to wish him much happiness!!! He has always been a whole lotta fun, as you can see by the picture below, he was a sport and joined us in "forbidden land" for most men. He went to the Farm Chicks Show with us!!

Now don't get us wrong, our brother is a very manly man, he loves football and hunting and lots of other guy things. He can't help himself, he just has junkin in his blood! He braved the crowds of women just to see what all of the fuss was about. I don't think it impressed him too much, after all he can see that kind of stuff in our garages anytime he feels like it. He just wanted to spend some time with us. Thanks Bro! We love ya!

Sisterhood of Traveling Junk

This weekend we met some new friends at the Meeker Mansion sale in Puyallup, WA. These three chicks, Deidre, Claudia and Suni, call themselves Junkies, honorgirl@comcast.net. We liked their stuff so much that we asked them to be vendors at our Fall Funky Junk Sisters Show on October 23 & 24. They offer a variety of found objects and junk projects for sale. Make sure you make plans to stop by their booth to say hello and pick up some great one of a kinds.

Ladies, October is breast cancer awareness month. Gather all of your junk buddies and join us to help raise money for the cause. On October 23 we are hosting an early shopping event to benefit breast cancer research. Down Right Neighborly!!

If you keep up with us on facebook (Ima Junksister)and twitter (funkyjunksisters)then you know that I (Linda) did a dumb thing today. I locked my keys in my car and I didn't have a spare! So many of you offered to help me and I thank you all for that, but the Milam dealership in Puyallup came to my rescue! This dealership is so friendly and helpful that I just had to tell you about them. They got me into my car lickety split and were happy to do it. I was walking out the door after they magically produced a key for me and this is what I read...

Milam and all of their staff is A - PLUS in my book. We have purchased 3 cars from them and have always been satisfied with their attitude "to please". I know this sounds like a commercial but when you feel good about something, you spread the word!

Trophy Cupcakes in Seattle

Throphy Cupcakes in Wallingford Center has created such a buzz that even Martha Stewart was interested. Here is the recipe that she featured on her show.

Chocolate Graham Cracker Cupcakes with Toasted Marshmallow Frosting
Ingredients
Makes 2 dozen
2 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (not Dutch-processed)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (from about 20 squares)
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
9 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 standard muffin tins with cupcake liners; set aside.

Sift 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together into the bowl of an electric mixer. Using the paddle attachment, mix ingredients together on low speed.

In a large bowl, mix together eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Add to flour mixture and beat on medium speed for 30 seconds. Scrape down sides of bowl and continue mixing on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add boiling water and stir to combine; set cake batter aside.

Place graham cracker crumbs, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and melted butter in a large bowl; stir until well combined.

Place 1 tablespoon graham cracker mixture into the bottom of each prepared muffin cup. Use the bottom of a small glass to pack crumbs into the bottom of each cupcake liner. Reserve remaining graham cracker mixture for topping.

Place 2 teaspoons chocolate in each muffin cup. Transfer muffin tins to oven and bake until the edges of the graham cracker mixture is golden, about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and fill each muffin cup three-quarters full with cake batter.

Sprinkle each with remaining chocolate and graham cracker mixture. Return to oven and bake, rotating pans halfway through baking, until tops are firm and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes.

Transfer muffin tins to a wire rack and let cupcakes cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove cupcakes from pan and let cool completely.

Transfer frosting to a large pastry bag fitted with a large plain round or French tip (such as Ateco #867 or Ateco #809). Pipe frosting in a spiral motion on each cupcake.

Transfer cupcakes to a baking sheet. Using a kitchen torch, lightly brown the frosting, taking care not to burn the cupcake liners.

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container, up to 2 days.

Marshmallow Frosting

Makes enough for 2 dozen cupcakes
8 large egg whites
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions
Place egg whites, sugar, and cream of tartar in the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer. Set over a saucepan with simmering water. Whisk constantly until sugar is dissolved and whites are warm to the touch, 3 to 4 minutes.
Transfer bowl to electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, and beat, starting on low speed, gradually increasing to high, until stiff, glossy peaks form, 5 to 7 minutes. Add vanilla, and mix until combined. Use immediately.

Another Post On Doors

A while back we posted about vinyl lettering, well here is another suggestion for it. We were blog browsing yesterday and came across this nifty idea at Thrifty Decor Chicks blog. ! Here is a before shot of her garage door....blahhhhh

Here is the after shot! Hallelujah!! This could really change your mood as you walked in the door, don't cha think? You wouldn't have to do this on a garage door, a front door would look good with it too.

Sarah, the thrifty decor chick, got her inspiration from this picture. We can totally see the house number thing on the front door even if you lived in a condo or an apartment. Super idea! Thanks for sharing with us Sarah.

The Sumner Art Festival Was Fun

Funky Junk Sister #1 was visiting this weekend, one of her favorite places to visit is Sumner, WA. We read on Amy's blog that Sumner was having their Art Festival so we thought it would be fun to check out.

Well we couldn't go to Sumner without visiting the girls at Today's Country Store. We were greeted by these sunny sunflowers on the bench at the entrance to the store.
This little banner was cute and I declare myself this!
Halloween? Darn, what happened to summer!

Lemonade anyone? Don't you just love this darling vintage table setting?

We chatted with everyone in the store for awhile, then we moved on to the outdoor booths. That is where we found these washtub fountains made by "Mom-n-Me" of Snohomish, WA (twofeathers@fairpoint.net). It is hard to see in the pics but the water is running.

This was fun too. Can you see the faucet with the water running from it. This really fits the bill for garden art.

We stopped in to say hi to Marlene at The New England Saltbox (253- 826-3506). She has a mix of old and new. Here are a few pics of the old.

This is a great use for an old window. Hang it from the ceiling with branches or garland. Twinkle lights would be nice too.

As you can see there is plenty to look at, so make sure you take the time to see everything.

We worked up an appetite with all of the walking and decided it was time to find a good place to eat. Someone said we should try The Buttered Biscuit (253-826-6099). It took us a bit to find it since it is behind the main street but the search was sooooo worth it.

As we sat down in our booth, mom noticed the plates of food the couple next to us had and she said "Wow, they sure are generous with their portions here!" Mom ordered chicken fried steak and I had a Reuben sandwich. First they brought out the absolute best cornbread we have ever had and it was drizzled with sweet cream. OMG!!! After that our plates came and my sandwich was HUGE. Mom got two HUGE chicken fried steaks, potatoes and eggs! You could have fed a family of four from her meal. Seriously! It was all so tasty too, really fabulous, you gotta go there!

Don't forget about the Dollar Store.

Shopping at a dollar store is an experience similar to a treasure hunt. Among the aisles of ceramic figurines, inflatable toys and churro-flavored Bugles, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

These adorable mini mirrors hang in our bathroom, they were purchased at The Dollar Store.


In this picture you can see the detail of the etching.

The key to dollar-store decorating is getting lots of goodies to mix with other fancy items. Use your finds thoughtfully. Everyone has that scarf we love that we picked up at the Thrift Store. When we wear it, we mix it with our favorite designer jacket. Decorating with dollar store items is the same idea. It's not going to look cheap in your home if you mix it with more sophisticated pieces.

These glass tea containers were also purchased at The Dollar Store as well as the trays hung on the wall below.

Now get out there and discover your nearest Dollar Store, you might be surprised at what you'll find!

Old West Inspiration

Our friend, Fancy at Cactus Creek Daily tweeted the other day about this fabulous chair. We loved it so much we had to show it to you. How many times have you passed up a chair with a shape similar to this one? Now you know just what to do with it! The turquoise color on the wood is so chic.

We never thought of doing this to a table. Oh boy, I feel a junk project coming on....

This pillow completes the look.

But wait, this is just too cool to forget to mention.
